The weekend involved me recovering and then visiting a fantastiv part of Washington DC. It was beautiful out but a little chilly so the cabinet show i attended was not as nice as last year, when i reread the hobbit. I realized the other day that I reread books with the seasons [and sub-seasons that I designate,] Pretty soon I will be rereading Shadowland and then right on to Grapes of Wrath and then a summer of new material [perhaps another reread of the silmarillion [not sure though] and then in august its the great gatsby. Well then september begins and its time to begin the epics, though i guess all my favorite novels are a little [or a lot] epic, with The Talisman and then I wait until right before thanksgiving and then its lord of the rings...now i realize that there are so many great books that i will eventually find myself rereading the same novels every year....and that may be true, but i have not figured out how to deal with that. If you are reading this and you cant understand why I enjoy reading so much just go out and pick up some trashy literature-stephen king, straub, koontz, herbert, card, whoever but make sure that you find a few books in your lifetime that you can identify with.

and if you read this and become one of those people that has books banned in their children's schools..... have yourself newtered now with a mace. When i heard the list of banned books i think i may have blacked out and destroyed an entire forest. may i stereotype for a moment please...? of course i may. Damn those soccer cheering-enya loving-Martha Stewart-wicked Genomes who pilot their silver SUVs into the world of art. I have a hunch this idiots who ban books [And Yes Farenheit 451 is one of the banned BECAUSE IT DISCUSSES BURNING BOOKS!!!!!] are illiterate. and what in gods name are the school boards thinking when they kowtow to these pant-suited titans of idiocy [and not to avoid being sexist, those confederate championing nicotine coated avengers of ignorance]????????????????????????

I think the signs of the apocalypse are going to be really domestic and mundane so here they are;

1.My glasses break at the hinge for no good reason.
2.I forget a pen when i go to class.
3.I leave dvd on at night and listen to the menu music loop because i am too tired to leave my bed.
4.Farenheit 451 is banned because in the book the bad guys burn books.
5.Fox stops making ground breaking reality television programs and replaces them with hilarious Malcolm in the Middle clones.
6.Someone uses "dude" in a serious context.
7.Fred Savage starts doing the wonder years again only now he has that old guys voice and he is an effiminate and boring adult who manages a Blockbuster.

by reading this blog i must come across a bitter rant loving psuedo-intellectual who only talks only about nerd concerns, trashy books, and politics which he is not very familiar with and you are right... except, that i am not really this bitter but I believe i am doing someone or something a service when i point out these insane things [FARANHEIT 451 BANNED FOR THE BOOK BURNING OH MY GOD.] and since the world around me is in a much more severe situation than some middle class college student from lancaster who does not like idiots who ban books and champion death or any of the other things i have ranted about lately...this college student does indeed realize how lucky he is and does indeed want everyone to know he is one happy guy.

well do not worry too much about lord of the rings that last post was the result of an internet april fools joke and I was obviously the fool. The site was sent death threats so I like to think that I handled such a nerdy blow in a mature manner.

I am just about finished with huck finn and he said something that seemed very poignant. "The average man is a coward." What mark twain meant by average, I think, is institutionalized [average is the key word.] When someone and a bunch of their friends agree that shooting arabs is the thing to do then they are going to say lets send in the troops. I wonder if the rifle where in their hands what their attitudes would really be like; the only true satisfaction is the "truimph of ideals [Emerson]" and I wonder if these individuals who so fervently champion violence, and goddamn freedom fries, really would be able to kill another man. We are not going over to Iraq to just get rid of weapons and saddam we are, obviously, going over their to kill people who have grown up in violence that the majority of the "average" men in America could not possibly imagine [no matter how many times they have seen full metal jacket, deer hunter, or platoon.] We are killing people not evil; thats why that "axis of evil" is such an insanely idiotic label. It seems that if mob mentality, which seems to present itself in violent picketts, vandals celebrating their sports team winning, woodstock, gang rape, etc. that americans are not so seperate from the "evil" army of Iraq. If Mob mentality can succeed in celebrations and political demonstrations why cant it succeed in an atmosphere of poverty and violence that doesnt leave when fox news stops and a rerun of Friends illuminates the average television screen. This atmosphere manifests violence and yet some would say that the armies of Iraq are "evil." I would say that war and evil are the products of circumstance; tragic circumstance. I am not saying that Hitler and nazi Germany should have gotten a slap on the wrist for world war 2 but rather that the Germans didnt lose their humanity or become evil, they were driven by circumstance to commit such horror. Twain would argue that both war hawk americans and Iraqees are both cowardly and I agree; to a degree. I believe that evil acts must be answered for but i do not believe any one is born evil; only an average man is a coward not a man without influence. Well there is a serious rant which is may just be the angry reaction to the terrible lecture on Huck Finn I had to endure today.

Well I have terrible news for everyone who loves the lord of the rings...the release date has been pushed back an extra six months so it can be all it can be [according to jackson.] Though the joy i feel when it is finally released will be much more exquisite so will my impatience. That really stinks since I enjoy seeing those films around christmas and stuff, damn damn damn. Well atleast harry potter and punch drunk love come out soon. Thats right you think we will stop with your potato innovations, forget it! Escargot will hence forth be called Liberty Snails. Seiously who the hell decided to think of calling french fries "freedom fries," i cannot think of anything more petty or pathetic and if you find yourself calling french fries "freedom fries" impail yourself with a spatula. I pray that what i heard about french fries is a joke and nobody is stupid enough to call them anything different.

when has disagreeing with the government unpatriotic? Just a few weeks before the war I am sure plenty of idiots were complaining about their gun rights but now that we are shooting foriegners they all agree with every idiotic word that plops out of the presidents mouth...and another thing, just because we are at war doesnt mean anyone has an obligation to stand behind the president, maybe he will decree tommorow that we all have a duty to magically transform into rapping cobras?.... or more importantly we end up in the same situation we were in in Vietnam,, or has everyone forgotten about that little tiff?

It seems that the same thing happens every war and then a million sad and clever movies have to act as america's conscience. It was Chicago, which I loved don't get me wrong, but I am not sure it was the best movie made this year. Chicago was stylistically perfect but besides the characters being very interesting and intruiging they never really seemed to change. Each character has to do something for themself and thats really all they do. I think Chicago itself was so full of razzle dazzle that we missed gangs of new york. I realize some academy members could have realized that in voting for the very very popular Chicago they are being ironic in awarding style over substance; awarding the razzle dazzle and not serving justice [the same justice roxy should have recieved in the film.] Neither film was perfect but the Gang's ambition alone is one reason it should have won. Chicago had plenty of style and it depicted the media in an interesting and certainely poignant way but I think Gangs was a much more important film + Daniel Day Lewis is insane. His character alone is fifty times more dynamic and complex than any of the characters in Chicago...feel free to argue but i just thought that Chicago winning was a lot like Roxie winning her court case and that was a really intriguing idea for me.

"Cause I'm tired of living and scared of dying." type='text'>

It is monday and classes are over and I realized that I may have the opportunity to see the latest stephen king film Dreamcatcher this friday. The book was dissapointing but the movie looks alright, I will read the reviews [www.rottentomatoes.com] before I spend my 8 bombonas....So i am a little anxious for this cinematic experience. What else are you "dying" to see matt? Well I will tell you

1. Return of the King [Two Towers=ungodly sweet, Fellowship=a truimph in the world of matt...My anticipation of this film is at an all time high and the pay off of actually experiencing it at 12:01 on a wednesday in December will probably be the cinematic highlight of my life so for this film alone the movie year looks fantastic.]

2. The Two New Matrix Films

3. Terminator [THough I do not consider myself a sexist I am little concerned that the new bad guy is a supermodel...Schwarzenegger was frightening because he is humongous, the second one just looked really creepy, this new one just looks determined but not scary....feel free to email me about how much of a sexist I am but girl terminators dont work I am sorry]

4. Harry Potter [ I refuse to read the books because, unlike the LOTR, it lacks the depth that Tolkien has but the films are great Especially if you arent aware that they are changing the book.]

5. Deathcab for Cutie

Who is ready for a discussion that sounds a bit like a summer camp or drinking party discussion...in referring to the last quote I would have to say if you are to appreciate closed amusement parks it is neccesary you visit wildwood or ocean city on a semi-rainy day but not too cloudy so that the sunset cannot leak through the haze and that you walk up and down the boardwalk. watch the rosy glow of abandoned coasters and blue and white super slides fade into view...it is a great atmosphere if you are tired of your current environment. or atleast download the song coney island by deathcab for cutie and try to picture what i just described though I would not consider that a legitimate substitute for taking a day off and visiting wildwood....get some mack and mancos while you are at it they are open year round.

conan o brian was making fun of the oscars tonight and I thought i would post my thoughts on the year in movies since I am a movie nerd. what were the top 5 films this year according to me

1. Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers [though this film does not deserve best picture it will next year, i do not consider the movies to be seperate entities.] *also download the song forth eorlingas and samwise the brave by howard shore.

2. Punch Drunk Love [Adam Sandler turns up the nuance and turns down the slapstick, this film is like true romance only quirkier. See Magnolia if you are curious about the director.

3.Catch Me If You Can or Chicago [Christopher Walken]

4.The Royal Tenembuams [ "You wanna talk some jive?! I'll talk some jive like you never heard." "I am sorry about your mother she was a very attractive woman."]

5.About Schmidt

This list is subject to change, especially since i am not sure all these came out this past year and also since i have written it quite quickly.

Wondering what hilarious movie to see next...try Bachelore Party with Tom Hanks. See a Hell's Angel arbitrarily thrust his head into a glass window, see a donkey sniff cocaine, see a tennis ball crushed in rage.

hmmmm...i think i may have sipped from too many flagons when i wrote that lost post but then again when one is simply musing he usually, or atleast in my case, comes off like an idiot anyway...got a little unexpected news the other night...i song i recorded with my band washtubcadence is now on a compilation put out by a very small record label call outreach records. From what I understand my labelmates who are also on this cd are pretty much full time rockers who only listen to cds i never heard of. Maybe one day I will meet them and they will discover my shameful cd collection, then the sham will be up and I will be pelted with condescending murmurs and psuedoclever quips between every song my band would play. When I think of the current state of independent music, this is extremely ancedotal, i usually think of great musicianship and terrible lyrics. It seems that the abstract, this is true for many of my songs too so don't picture this coming from a secure soapbox, that abstraction can substitute for depth or meaning. its always some girl or friend....
"she orbits souls and plucks the rings. There is a veil of tears but its beautiful like a ceremony. keep falling through in autumn" or something ridiculous like that. And many of these writers are under the impression that their material is groundbreaking and if it made the radio there is something about that particular song that attracts idiots.
I also notice that screaming in a song is now not only reserved for passionate metalheads and extreme punk bands [or whatever the heck they are called] but its ok for independent music or the really annoying label i heard once or twice screamo[ or something annoying like that.] I wish there were less screamers out there and more people who could just substitute that rage for a melody. I am not saying that yelling is always something that hurts a song but it just seems like the interesting part of the song the interplay between guitar and voice is torn down so the voice becomes static and some of the idiots in the audience can "lose themeselves and mosh." i will never understand people who speak in tongues, see apparitions, or lose themselves in music to the point where they thrash about like a large buck having a seizure. I never see midgets or cripples moshing but, atleast ostensibly, they have the capacity to appreciate music to the extreme those moshing idiots do. They dont mosh because they are not really aesthetic people they dont participate because its a dance for idiots. I think that maybe breakdancers should usurp the moshers and then the concert would be really interesting. Imagine playing a particularly rythmic song and half the audience starts spinning on their heads and setting their trusty pumas ablaze with happiness. I think that would be fantastic. I also think that at a large arena bands should force the entire stadium to slow dance with strangers and create that seventh grade mixer awkwardness on a very grand scale. "Hello cleveland or you ready to slow dance?"

Mirth [in the context of alcoholic indulgence] according to myself is the product of wine [or meade since it sounds so great but I have not tried it yet] and not hard liquor [excludig whiskey [[read cannery row by john steinbeck for an adequate explanation]]] Wine leaves a taste that is worth keeping unlike...hmmmm lets say tequila or vodka...if you are one who intends to partake in mirth find something you like not something that makes inebriation easier. They stood shoulder to shoulder, the drunken uncle's with their arms relaxed around other more uncomftarable and sober family members, and the family leaders staring into the camera as if challenging it. A stream shot out of the upper right hand corner and curved and bowed across the picture dissapearing on the lower left hand side. The setting may one have been organic but the camera bleached out all the life--the camera killed everything. I knew several members were now dead and the picture perfectly communicated this fact. All the shadowed eyes and grey scowls seemed to form a collective ghostly gaze. I could see my mother was pregnant with me at the time and I realized that in this picture I was a mere lump; a roundish bulge and nothing more. I could make out make out my aunt who was a little left to the center of the photograph. In reality she was probably fattening up at the time but the camera stopped her body from inflating from becoming this grotesque and detailed and life-like circus balloon.

I was thinking, what if something as dumb as the blog were the only thing I wrote that people found after I died. Balzac.....This is from the front of the Godfather...The Front Quote is where there is usually where some sort of clever quote is placed to get the reader prepped for picking out the neccesary themes in the upcoming text. I notice this in Stephen King novels, I particularly remember reading "It" and the quote "Born Down In Deadman's Town" which is a lyric from Bruce Springsteen's song "Born in the USA." Though this song is usually accompanied by some sort of huge patriotic hoop-la I thought it was interesting that now that song reminds me of a child killing clown...that line alone in the context of a patriotic anthem is something that makes me wonder about Springsteen's new album the rising, and whether their may be some bizarre purpose behind its creation...This is probably Stephen King's fault.

Stephen King writes entertaining novels but some are awful [ie. the dead zone, Dreamcatcher [[though the film could be good considering the book reads like a movie]]] but if you want a few thousand pages of trashy fun here is a list from greatest to not the greatest.

The Talisman [the best and it was cowritten with Peter Straub who wrote a really awful novel koko and a really great one Shadowland, for which this site is named [its not my favorite book of all time or anything I just like the names in the novel [ie.
